The Local Climate

Exploring Nerja Climate

Nerja has one of the friendliest climate across Europe. In fact, it sits just next to Torrox, a town relished all over Europe for its superior climate.

Nerja is an extremely temperate resort town that enjoys the protection of Sierra Almijara y Tejeda hills that shield it from not just rain but cold air emerging from the north. On the other side lies the African continent from which it gets a decent supply of warm air.

What’s the weather like throughout the Year?

For the most part of the year, this resort town enjoys moderate weather. Naturally, there will be sunshine for roughly three-quarters of all the days in a year. Cloudy days will only take a third of these sunshine days. Much as you can’t have complete trust in the weather, here’s a brief guide on what to expect from the time the year begins all the way to the tail end.

January (Average High: 16.1°, Average low: 7.2°)

Over daytime, temperatures usually average to about 16 degrees but other times it could be higher by 2 or 3 degrees. Evenings are mostly cool and sometimes cold enough to require a Jacket or coat.

February (Average High: 16.7°, Average low: 8.3°)

Daytime temperature in February often sticks around 17 degrees and during time it drops down to about 7 or 8 degrees. You might require a coat or jacket to keep you warm.

March (Average High: 18.9°, Average low: 9.4°)

In March, daytime temperatures naturally rise to about 19 degrees but come night time, they drop by half to about 9 degrees. Over the years, March has always been the month where wetness is at its peak. But this doesn’t translate to extremely bad weather. In fact, such times are scarce and many times March can be a nice month.

April (Average High: 20.0°, Average low: 10.6°)

April is the month you will have averages of 20 degrees over day time. But at night time, it gets a little better compared to the nights from previous months. It will be about 11 degrees and so you might not necessarily require a jacket but a shirt with long sleeves will keep you sufficiently warm.

May (Average High: 23.3°, Average low: 13.3°)

Ever heard of the San Isidro procession & Festival? Trust me, it’s one of those amazing festivals everyone wants to attend and it takes places on May 15th. This is largely because the weather starts to get a little warmer during this time, often hitting highs of 24 and lows of 11 on average during night time.

June (Average High: 26.7°, Average low: 17.2°)

June sets the pace for summer. This means a t-shirt will be fine whether it’s daytime or nighttime. As for the temperatures, over daytime expect an average of about 27 degrees and 17 degrees at night.

July (Average High: 28.9°, Average low: 20.0°)

July is the ideal month to have on your fancy shorts and t-shirts. It’s slightly hotter than June with daytime temperatures often averaging to about 29 degrees. If you are planning to move around or go for trips, always bring along enough drinking water. And the great thing is that bars and restaurants not just around here but all over Spain are obligated to offer you drinking water should you ever ask or need it at no fee. During evenings the temperatures come down to about twenty.

August (Average High: 29.4°, Average low: 20.6°)

Even though the temperatures during this month can sometimes go as high as 40 degrees, more often than not it stays around 30 and evenings and nights will often experience an average of 20-21 degrees.

September (Average High: 27.8°, Average low: 18.3°)

September marks the start of another season as it’s the period when the temperatures start to come down.28 degrees is the average to expect over daytime and at night time it drops further down to about 18 degrees. You can still keep your shorts and t-shirts during this time.

October (Average High: 23.3°, Average low: 14.4°)

In October, daytime temperatures drop further down to 23 degrees on average and sometimes it also gets a little wet but not for long. You might require a jacket during time because the weather can get quite unpredictable seeing that it’s the month when huge floods rocked the town and brought havoc back in 2007. At nighttime, expect an average of about 18 degrees.

November (Average High: 19.4°, Average low: 11.1°)

November is a calm month. Over daytime, temperatures stick around 19 degrees and drop to about 11 degrees when evening starts. A jacket could help to keep you warm over nighttime.

December (Average High: 17.2°, Average low: 8.9°)

December is also a nice month. And as you go about this holiday-crammed month, expect daily temperatures averaging roughly 17 degrees. At night, expect half of that which means you might need a jacket or coat to keep you warm. Every Christmas that we have spent in the area has been warm and sunny. Just find a place sheltered from any cool wind and it can be almost too hot. Perfect!

Fun and Common Activities To Do

There are several inexpensive but fun activities you can do during the year while here in Nerja. Common ones include:

  • Swimming
  • Sunbathing
  • Walking

Each of these activities are better suited over certain months. For instance, you can enjoy walking mostly during the warm months and this includes anywhere between October and January and also in March and April. Not too hot.

When it comes to swimming you can do it at any time of the year but if you look to having more fun times then the period between April and mid-October is the best, and the water temperatures are at their highest.

As for sunbathing, you can as well do it at any time during the year but expect the fun to be short-lived from November all the way to March.

Sea Temperatures and Snowing

Sea temperatures during summer, specifically in August usually average to 24 degrees and during winter, particularly February, they drop down to about 14 degrees. For the 50 years that have just elapsed, snowing has only happened once in Nerja but it only lasted a couple of hours. But the hills surrounding the town are usually covered in Snow during winter and this often results into a cold wind in the region.
